Close Board Fencing in Nottingham

CP Driveways installs close board fencing throughout Nottingham and the surrounding NG11 area. Close board is the most durable and robust timber fencing option available for residential and light commercial properties. Where panel fences can blow over or warp, a well-built close board fence stands firm. We have been installing close board fencing across Nottingham for 20 years and offer free quotes on all close board work.

More Information

How Close Board Fencing is Built

Close board fencing is constructed on site rather than using pre-made panels. Arris rails are fixed horizontally between the posts and individual feather-edge boards are nailed vertically to the rails, each one slightly overlapping the last. This creates a solid, uniform fence with excellent privacy and wind resistance. The in-situ construction means the fence can be adapted to slopes and irregular boundaries much more easily than panel fencing.

Why Close Board Outperforms Panels

Panel fences act like a sail in the wind. When wind gets under a panel, it can blow out or blow over. Close board fencing has small gaps between the boards that allow wind to pass through slightly, which significantly reduces the force exerted on the fence. Individual boards can also be replaced if they are damaged without dismantling whole sections. Over time, a close board fence is usually more cost-effective than repeatedly replacing blown-out panels.

Posts, Capping Rails and Finishing

Every close board fence we install uses properly concreted posts, either timber or concrete depending on your preference. We fit an arris rail system that is secured correctly to the posts and use quality treated feather-edge boards throughout. A capping rail is fitted along the top to protect the top ends of the boards from the weather. Gravel boards are fitted at the base to keep the boards clear of the soil. The finished result is a solid, well-built fence that looks professional from both sides.

ABOUT US

A close board fencing job in Toton involved installing a long boundary fence for a homeowner whose panel fence had blown over twice in two winters and who wanted something that would not keep coming down. We put in close board on concrete posts with capping rails and gravel boards and built it to a height of 1.8 metres for full privacy. Two years later it is still standing perfectly. That is the kind of result we aim for on every close board job across the Nottingham area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is close board fencing worth the extra cost in Nottingham?

For most homeowners in Nottingham, especially on exposed plots or where a panel fence has repeatedly failed, close board fencing is absolutely worth the additional cost. It lasts longer, handles wind better and individual boards can be replaced cheaply if needed. Over 10 years it often works out less expensive than repeatedly replacing panel sections.

How long does close board fencing last in Nottingham?

A well-built close board fence on properly set posts can last 20 to 25 years or more in Nottingham with occasional treatment and minor maintenance. The posts typically last the longest, with boards being the most likely element to need replacing first. CP Driveways uses quality treated timber to maximise longevity.

Can close board fencing be built on a sloped boundary in Nottingham?

Yes. Close board fencing is actually easier to install on a slope than panel fencing because it is built in situ rather than using fixed-height panels. We can step or rake the fence to follow the line of the ground. Call 07400203588 and we will assess your boundary and quote accordingly.
